Hell everybody, This is Tanweer. Today i have interesting Tech News related to 13 – digit numbers to Mobile Operators. The 13-digit machine – to – machine (M2M) numbering plan is looking to be implemented from July 1, 2018. The Department of Telecom (DoT) has asked all telecom operators to starting issuing for trial of 13-digit mobile numbers which are based on SIMs for all Machine-to-Machine (M2M) customers communications like smart electric metres and car tracking devices.
What is M2M Communication ?
Machine to Machine (M2M) is referred to the communication or interaction between two devices which can get work done without human interference. it could be airplane, ship, connected cars, or bicycle that are connected to the internet and to each other. The M2M SIM card is required to connect these devices to the internet.
The 13-digit numbers will co-exist with 10-digit numbers and the 13-digit numbers have been allocated to state-run firm BSNL and private telecom operators Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio, Idea Cellular and Vodafone for testing purposes only.
In case of M2M services, internet-enabled devices like point-of-sale machines or even the latest refrigerators can communicate via a SIM card. The DoT said all service providers must ensure that their network elements including IT and other relevant systems are aligned with 13-digit numbering for M2M SIMs before July 1, 2018. This is different from regular GSM SIMs that can be transferred from one phone to another.
M2M communication is only for concepts such as smart homes, smart cars etc. M2M communication can include a gas, electricity or water meter communicating information it records such as consumption level, or a vending machine alerting distributor when stocks run low, or transmission of data about personal appliances.
Why is this Technology so important in India ?
The most important uses of this method of communication is Internet of Things (IoT). M2M communication is a fundamental block to build smart cities development. For this 5G service will enhance the capability of this specific type of machine to machine interaction.
In future, smartphones will not be the only smart devices in your home. We can expect vehicles running on the road to communicate with each other to avoid collisions or even tricky situations.
For GSM mobile subscribers
This move will have no effect on the 10-digit mobile numbers being used by the mobile customers in their personal capacity
CONCLUSION : The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has recommended that all telecom licence holders should be allowed to provide M2M service using any spectrum. However, it has suggested that critical M2M services should be provided by those companies who have licensed spectrum.
